ricka was in the kitchen keeping busy as Nick showed Cannon to the guest room. He didn’t say a word when he entered, but she knew he was there. She turned and met his seductive brown eyes.

“I can’t make you love me if you don’t, but I will never give up trying. Call it a fool’s errand or being blinded by love. Either way, you got under my skin, Ericka Kennedy. Nothing you do will ever change that. Stay, or leave in the morning with Cannon, that choice is yours. I will not chase, you have to want to stay. It’s been a sleepless three months without you and no decisions have to be made tonight.” He held his hand out. “Let’s go to bed, get some sleep. If you are still here when I wake up, I will have my answer and so will you.”

The man was too damn sweet for his own good. How could she do anything but beg for his forgiveness and love him. She put the cloth she was holding down, walked over and took his hand. The warmth of his hand flooded her with contentment. She was home. It wasn’t going to be an easy adjustment for her, but she vowed in that moment she would never do anything again to lose his trust.

Nick closed the door behind them as they entered the bedroom. He stripped her down to her undies, then he did the same. He pulled the comforter back as she slid under the sheets. He slid in next to her, gathered her in his arms, used his hand to close her eyes, he closed his and they fell asleep.

Naverone drove as Vernon watched the night scenery along the ninety-minute drive. She glanced at him knowing his mind was working on payback for Isaac Singleton. “I want you to know I don’t visit people in jail. Whatever is going on in your mind is not worth you losing your freedom. You are a highly intelligent man. I am certain you can come up with a way to make him pay that is legal.”

“Do you have any idea how intoxicating the fragrance you’re wearing is?” He turned back to the window.

“Sweet talk is not going to change the topic.”

“I think it will. You can barely resist me as it is.”

Naverone smiled. “This situation…with Singleton isn’t just about him stealing an inheritance from Bobby Kennedy. If he has his way, he will be stealing from you as well.”

“I wouldn’t take it. I would give it to the Kennedy kid. Old man Singleton doesn’t owe me a dime. If anything, I owe him.” He thought for a moment before sharing his feelings. It wasn’t something that came easy for Vernon. “I always knew I was different growing up. Not because of anything my parents did. They loved me unconditionally. Believe me, I gave them reason after reason to get rid of me. No matter what I did they were always there to correct me in a loving way.
